ZEC difficulty FAQ

How often does ZEC difficulty change?

With every block, roughly every 75 seconds: the network adjusts difficulty so that blocks are found every 75 seconds on average. It can move by tens of percent within a day, so the chart shows the daily average difficulty.

Why did difficulty halve in December 2019?

That was the Blossom network upgrade: blocks started coming twice as often — every 75 seconds instead of 150 — and the difficulty of one block halved. The block reward was halved at the same time, so miner revenue didn't change.

How is ZEC difficulty related to hashrate?

Difficulty multiplied by 8192 is roughly the number of Equihash solutions needed per block. Divide that by the block time and you get the network hashrate: at the current difficulty of 280.48 M and a block every 75 seconds, about 30.64 GSol/s.

How does difficulty affect ZEC miner revenue?

Output is inversely proportional to difficulty: if difficulty rises 10%, the same ASIC mines about 10% less ZEC. See your device's revenue in the ZEC mining calculator.

What is the ZEC block reward?

Miners get 1.25 ZEC, 80% of the block reward; the rest goes to the Zcash development fund. The reward halves every 1,680,000 blocks, roughly every 4 years: the next halving is at block 4,406,400, roughly in November 2028, after which miners will get 0.625 ZEC.

How often is the data updated?

Our server collects the daily average difficulty every 5 minutes and cross-checks several sources; the page updates every hour. The chart shows the daily average difficulty across all network blocks since its launch in 2016.
